Sabudana Khichdi

Sabudana khichdi is a great snack. Usually made during fast day, the tapioca pearls are soaked in water overnight or at least 3-4 hours. The spices used are cumin seeds, curry leaves and chili powder.  Peanuts after being dry roasted and powdered are added to the khichdi to give a rich taste.soaked_sabudana

Sabudana Khichidi




  • Sabudana Tapioca pearls : 2cups
  • Peanuts: 1/2 cup
  • Potato: 1 large
  • Turmeric powder: 1/4 tsp
  • Chilli powder: 1/2 tsp
  • Green chillies: 2
  • Mustard seeds: 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds: 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves: 10-12
  • Coriander leaves
  • Oil : 2tbsp
  • Salt


  • Soak the sabudana overnight
  • Dry roast the peanuts. Grind them into a fine powder or crush them into small pieces
  • Pressure cook the potato and cut into small pieces
  • Slit the green chillies


  • Take the sabudana in a bowl and mix it with the chilli powder and turmeric powder
  • Heat oil in wok
  • Add the mustard seeds and let them crackle
  • Add the cumin seeds
  • Reduce the heat and add the green chillies and curry leaves.
  • Add the potato pieces
  • Add the sabudana and mix throughly
  • Sprinkle the roasted peanut powder(or crushed peanuts) and mix throughly
  • Add a tablespoon more oil if required
  • Keep stirring and cook the khichdi for 8-10 mins on low heat.
  • Add salt to taste
  • Garnish with coriander and serve hot


  • The khichdi can be made without the potato
  • A topping of sev can also be added  while serving the khichdi
