Raw Banana Curry

Almost every part of the banana plant is useful. Raw banana fry and the bajjis/pakoras are quite common. The curry that is made with them is also quite delicious. Here is one recipe with tomatoes providing the gravy and the peanut powder & the coconut powder giving a good taste and some richness.


  • Raw banana: 2
  • Tomatoes: 2
  • Red Chillies: 4
  • Curry leaves: 8-10
  • Desiccated coconut powder: 2 tbsp
  • Roasted peanut powder: 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds: 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder: 1/4 tsp
  • Red chilli powder: 1/2 tsp
  • Oil: 2 tsp
  • Salt


  • Peel the raw bananas, cut them into cubes and immediately soak them in water
  • Cut the tomatoes into small pieces


  • Heat oil in a thick wok
  • Add the mustard seeds and let them crackle
  • Reduce the heat to medium and add the turmeric powder, curry leaves and red chilies
  • Remove the raw banana cubes from the water and add to the wok. Mix well and cook for two minutes
  • Add the coconut powder and roasted peanut powder. Mix and cook for a minute
  • Add the tomato pieces and the red chilli powder. Cover the wok with the lid and let it cook for a minute low heat
  • Mix well and add a cup of water for the gravy. Add salt
  • Cover the wok and cook until the raw banana is cooked. It should take about eight minutes on low heat
  • There you go a thick raw banana curry
